We had the incredible honour of attending the media launch of the new Rolls Royce Cullinan, Rolls Royce’s first SUV. Countless automakers have tried to blend luxury with off-roading capabilities earlier but have fallen short every time. Rolls Royce, however, has pulled off this feat. To quote CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, “We want to create the Rolls Royce of SUV’s”.Rolls Royce has always been in a league of its own, offering the epitome of luxury, the subtle opulence that seems to impress effortlessly. You can’t think of Rolls Royce without the word luxury crossing your mind, without images of champagne bottles and chandelier lit hotel hallways popping up in your imagination. However, there has always been a divide between the world of luxury automobiles and off roaders. Adding fancy interiors and leather seats to an off roader doesn’t make your dune bashing experience any more luxurious. SUV’s are supposed to be rugged, rigid vehicles, ready to take on any challenge the road has to offer. Why would you need luxury when you’re the kind of person who enjoys the great outdoors, who doesn’t mind getting their hands calloused every now and then, who actually enjoys the adrenaline rush of driving through snow, or rain, or sand, or any other rough terrain you can think of. This is where Rolls Royce really makes a difference. They don’t try to offer you something you need; they show you what you need. They show you something you’ve never seen before. They don’t try to fit a niche; they carve one of their own. That’s what Rolls Royce has been doing for over a century, and that’s what they will continue to do for generations to come. The Cullinan, in true Rolls Royce fashion, exceeds expectations. It’s powered by a 6.75 litre Twin Turbo V12 engine that offers a roaring 563 hp and 815 Nm of torque. The power is disturbed equally among the front and back wheels, making it perfect for off-roading. If you’re still thinking that something this luxurious shouldn’t be on rough terrain, think twice. While most serious SUV’s have modes for driving on each terrain (such as snow, sand, road, etc.) that requires you to gauge the terrain and set the driving mode yourself, the Cullinan has one single button that does the trick. A simple push of the OFF ROAD BUTTON situated to the right of the drivers seat, and the vehicle automatically detects the terrain and sets the driving parameters by itself, saving you the trouble of doing so. The Cullinan has a self-leveling air suspension system, whereby the cameras on the windscreen sees the terrain ahead and adjusts suspension proactively. It also electronically controls the air suspensions and uses an air compression system to push down any wheel that seems to be losing traction. The cabin is hermetically and acoustically sealed from the trunk space, something no other SUV hosts till date. This means that your luxurious ride wouldn’t be disturbed even if you were driving with the trunk wide open. The white interiors lined with wooden furnishings, and a pop out champagne cooler, screams luxury. There’s a certain Je ne sais quois about this, something very Rolls Royce, but also something very authentic. The attention to detail in this vehicle is incredible. It features classic chrome switches and wooden veneers, reminiscent of a 50’s limousine, combined with the electronic magic of a futuristic vehicle. The dashboard buttons are minimal and simplistic, yet highly functional. The doors can be closed with a push of a button or a simple push of a finger from outside. No Rolls Royce would be complete with the classic coach doors and the Cullinan is the only SUV that comes with stock coach doors. It also has an umbrella compartment built into the doors, housing a nylon umbrella with a regal handle. The umbrella holder also contains a dryer which will dry your wet umbrella in a couple of minutes.
The Cullinan houses a bespoke audio system, made especially for Rolls Royce, with 16 speakers and 2 subwoofers. The touch screens attached to the back of the front seats can be accessed with the push of a button, which would drop down the picnic table/tray as well. The lower ventilation beneath the passenger seats will make you want to kick off your shoes and cool down on a hot day. It also has a panoramic sunroof which extends all the way back. The trunk cover is electronic, as expected of a luxury SUV. What sets the Cullinan apart are the gems that hide in the trunk. Excepting the fact that it is very spacious, it also has retractable chairs that allow you to enjoy the sunset from a canyon, or watch your kids play volleyball at the beach. The rear passenger seats can be pushed down completely to increase storage space in the trunk. The towing hook in the Cullinan is hidden and will pop out with the press of button situated on the inside of the trunk door.
The Spirit of Ecstasy, the regal metal sculpture that is even more famous than the double R insignia of Rolls Royce, decorates the bonnet and comes in a variety of finishes such as chrome, 24 carat gold plated, or in a crystal finish that can be lit from below. To quote rapper Jay-Z, “Nothing exceeds like excess”. For common folk like us, a Rolls Royce is excessive, luxury is excessive. However, to someone who can afford a Rolls Royce, excess is merely a word. That being said, the Cullinan isn’t a car for someone who just craves luxury. It is a vehicle for someone who wants to explore the world and all of its rugged obstacles without compromising on luxury. This is for someone who has achieved all the wealth they would ever need and is looking for new experiences that money cannot buy. This is luxury, regality, and adventure packed into one beautiful creation. The Cullinan truly is the Rolls Royce of SUV’s.
